One talent card is not tied to a job or a project. People whose renown is established, or likely to benefit France, can receive a talent card that allows any professional activity. It is designed for recognised scientists, writers, artists, artisans, academics and athletes.

Conditions
- Renown. Your national or international renown is established, or is likely to contribute significantly and durably to France's economic development, regional development or international standing.
- A field of activity you come to exercise in France: scientific, literary, artistic, artisanal, intellectual, educational or sports.
- Resources of at least the annual gross SMIC for your own needs: about €22,404 a year in 2026. This figure follows the minimum wage.
The law sets no list of prizes, titles or figures that prove renown. The assessment is made case by case, on the file you present.
Not sure your profile meets the renown test, or which evidence carries weight? A short consultation is enough to check before you apply.
Documents and procedure
The administration publishes no dedicated checklist for this category. The file rests on evidence of renown and on a description of the activity planned in France and its expected contribution, alongside proof of resources. If you live abroad, the French consulate issues a long-stay "talent" visa. If you already live in France legally, the préfecture of your place of residence decides. A first card costs €350 in tax stamps.
Your rights
- Work. The card allows any professional activity: research, teaching, consulting, performing, coaching or running a business, at the same time if you wish. Employers need no work authorisation.
- Family. Your spouse and children get a "talent (famille)" card without family reunification, and your spouse can work in France.
- No integration contract. No A2 test or civic exam for this card.
When it gets complicated
The test is open-ended, which cuts both ways. These situations often go wrong:
- Proving renown. No list of prizes or figures exists in the text. Which evidence is persuasive, and how it is presented, decides the outcome.
- Online fame. A large social media following is not the same as renown in a scientific, literary, artistic, artisanal, intellectual, educational or sports field.
- "Likely to contribute". Showing a significant and durable contribution to France requires a concrete plan, not only a past record.
- Choosing between cards. Someone who qualifies for the artist, researcher or founder card may still be better served by the renown card, or the reverse.
- Income from abroad. Fees, royalties and prize money paid abroad must be documented for the SMIC test, and raise tax questions once you live in France.
- Renewal. Keeping the activity consistent with the renown that justified the card matters at renewal.
